The Rockets have a blast in Benidorm

A WIGTON band which has been gigging for 47 years went down a storm on one of Europe’s biggest stages at Benidorm Palace.
Drummer Rueben Slater had just celebrated his 60th birthday when Rue and the Rockets were invited to play in the country where they had a number one hit with Sticky Vicky two years ago.
“We stormed them,” said Rue. “We got applause twice as loud as anyone else, and when we mentioned Carlisle the place erupted.
“It was beyond my wildest dreams to get invited to play in another country and have people saying ‘We know about you’. I couldn’t believe it, all those miles away.
“The stage was so big they could fit an aeroplane on it.”
The band did a tribute to 1950s singer Frankie Laine, who died last month.
The event was headlined by Black Lace, of Agadoo fame, who represented Great Britain in 1979 in the Eurovision Song Contest.
