Last updated at 14:20, Monday, 02 November 2009
The twenty first Cumbria Classic Weekend proved to be a roaring success with record entries on both days. Saturday saw the Rose and Thistle Run which had a full 70 car entry and started at Carlisle Airport beside the Museum of Flight. The 140 mile route took cars to Selkirk for lunch and a further loop along the superb Border roads to afternoon tea near Carlisle.
Well over 500 cars were entered for the Cumbria Classic Car Show at Dalemain House on Sunday, ranging from cars around 100 years old to modern competition and customised cars. Although drizzle during the afternoon reduced the spectator attendance entrants, who had come from all over the UK said the show was the best organised event they had been to.
The Car of the Show, for the second year running was the superb Jaguar E type of Stuart Oliver.
The hunt for the Oldest Mini in Cumbria went to Tim Smith’s 1959 model which was the original show car in the Graham & Roberts Showroom in Carlisle and has celebrated it’s 50th birthday a couple of days before the Classic Show.
The organising Wigton Motor Club put on a fine display of competition and classic cars as well as a demonstration autotest event. Many enthusiasts joined the club which is hitting record membership numbers which now reach well over 560. Committee member Pater Garforth said the Club were delighted with the response to the Weekend and that work would soon start on the 2010 version.
Cumbria Police teamed up with Wigton Motor Club to promote road safety
Officers from North Allerdale police teamed up with the roads policing unit to promote road safety at the Wigton Motor Club Classic Car Show at Dalemain on Sunday. PS Michael Montgomery from North Allerdale and PC Kevin Howe from the roads policing unit took the force Mitsubishi Evo and the Bike Safe Kawasaki to the show where they proved to be a big hit with the public at the show.
Despite bad weather the show attracted thousands of visitors and participants. PS Montgomery and PC Howe were kept busy all day with people keen to see the vehicles and ask questions about topics as far ranging as Safety Camera vans, towing A-frames and tyre wear.
Graeme Forrester one of the event organiser said; "It was great to have the police at our event - as a club we are keen to ensure that we send out a strong message about road safety and that our members and the general public drive carefully on the roads around the county."
