Boy suffers head injuries in road accident in Cumbrian town

A seven-year-old boy was taken to hospital with head injuries and a broken arm after being hit by a wagon.

It happened at about 3.45pm yesterday on West Road, Wigton, near the junction with Greenacres.

The boy, from the local area, was initially unconscious.

The Great North Air Ambulance’s Pride of Cumbria helicopter attended but was not needed.

The boy regained consciousness and was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle by road ambulance.

He spent the night on the children’s ward, where he was last night undergoing tests, after sustaining head injuries and a broken right arm.

The full extent of his injuries are not known.

The driver of the lorry was not seriously hurt.

The road, between the Park Road junction and the A596, was closed for several hours following the crash.

Diversions were put in place but traffic built up through rush hour, causing some significant delays.

Accident investigators conducted a thorough examination of the scene before finally reopening the road at about 9.30pm.

  • Meanwhile an 11-year-old Carlisle boy was yesterday said to be in a stable condition at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary after being involved in an accident.

It happened shortly after 4pm on Tuesday on Currock Road.

Police said the boy, who was thought to have just stepped off a bus when the accident happened, suffered a head injury after he was struck by a car.

The circumstances are not clear but involved a blue Ford Escort driven by a 33-year-old Carlisle man.

The boy’s condition was not thought to be life-threatening.
